How to Compose a CV for the Latvian Market: Tips from IT Camp

Your CV is your first introduction to a potential employer and your main ticket to an interview. To make sure your resume works 100% in the Latvian context, here are some practical tips:

Golden Rules

  • Be honest, but cut the fluff. Focus on the achievements and skills that are relevant to the specific position you are applying for.
  • Flawless grammar. Check your text for typos. If you are writing your CV in Latvian or English, ask a native speaker to proofread it or use specialized checking tools.
  • Clear structure and conciseness. The optimal length is 1–2 pages. Recruiters' time is valuable.

What Your CV Must Contain:

  1. Personal Data: Name, surname, up-to-date contact information (phone, email, and LinkedIn profile link). ⚠️ Important for Latvia: In compliance with GDPR regulations, you are not required to include your personal code (personas kods), exact home address, age, or marital status in your CV.
  2. Target Position: Clearly state the vacancy you are applying for.
  3. Work Experience: In reverse chronological order (starting with your most recent role). Emphasize achievements (metrics, projects, results) rather than just listing daily duties.
  4. Education: Also in reverse chronological order.
  5. Language Skills: This is a critical section for Latvia. Clearly specify your proficiency levels (e.g., using the A1–C2 framework or Basic/Intermediate/Fluent) for Latvian, English, and any other languages you know.

Formatting and Templates

  • Photo: In Latvia, adding a photo to your CV is standard practice, but it must be strictly professional (business attire, neutral background). If you don't have a high-quality photo, it's better to leave it out.
  • Where to build your CV? You can design it yourself (for example, using Canva or Novoresume). The Europass format is also widely recognized and still popular in Latvia and the EU, though modern, stylish templates are often preferred for creative and IT roles.
